Be sure to rinse out cans and bottles when recycling. While some residual food is not bad for the recycling process, it can be tempting to wildlife. Wild animals can harm themselves trying to get to food at the bottom of a can; the sharp edges can cut them. Rinse out your cans and bottles and only put them out for collection on recycling pickup days.

If you're washing your hands in a public bathroom, one crank of the paper towel roller is enough. Don't crank the roller five or six times to get a one giant sheet of paper. A small piece will do just fine, even if it still leaves your hands a bit damp, because your hands will dry in a few seconds flat. But don't be tempted to avoid hand-washing altogether -- a healthier environment is better than no regard to the environment at all.

Office mailrooms are usually overflowing with cardboard boxes, lightly used bubble wrap and Styrofoam packing peanuts. Stock up on these throwaway shipping supplies and create a mini shipping center right in your own home. That way, when you need to send something in a jiffy, you'll have all the supplies on hand. And you're being green because you're recycling what would've otherwise been tossed.
