Because we're turning into a more digital society, leaving messages for your family at home should be digital as well. Instead of jotting down notes on paper, send a text message or an e-mail to the recipient. This way, you'll cut down on paper use and also be more assured that they'll get the message directly, too.

Bring a reusable, stainless-steel coffee thermos to your regular barista the next time you fill up on a skim latte with an extra shot. Some stores will even give you a discount for bringing the thermos. Added bonus? Your hot drink stays hot longer, and because most coffee mugs are designed to be spill-proof, you won't splatter that mocha latte all over your shirt.

Tip: Store hot macaroni and cheese in a thermos to enjoy a warm lunch at work.

Make sure the damper on your fireplace is completely closed. Keeping a damper open all winter long is like having a small window open. Brrrr! Not sure if it's open or closed? Place a featherweight plastic bag (like a grocery store bag) in the fireplace; if it flutters, it's probably open. By keeping the damper closed, you'll keep cold air from seeping in, saving you energy and money.
