When the old-fashioned incandescent lightbulb burns out yet again, choose a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) to replace it. They use up to one-tenth the energy (translation: savings on your electric bill), and last up to five times longer, which means fewer moments risking your life to change that ceiling fixture! If the bright, white light from the CFL is too bright for you, be sure to look for CFLs with lower lumen rating; a higher lumen is bright white, while a lower lumen mimics a soft, yellowy glow.

Tip: When bagging glass bottles, pack them on their sides, not upright; you'll be able to fit more in the bag, and they won't tip over in the car ride home.

We all know that bringing our own reusable canvas tote bags to the grocery store is the greenest choice. But if you want heavy-duty, extra-tough bags that can hold a lot of groceries, then look no further than your local sporting goods store. Large, sturdy totes designed to haul sporting equipment will do an extra-good job carrying heavy groceries, too.
