It's a designation that certifies that the firewood you're burning has been treated to kill any invasive insects or disease that may live in the wood. This is far different from seasoned firewood; just because the firewood is dried out doesn't mean it's free of invasive insects. In fact, studies have shown seasoned firewood still had insects three years after the wood had been cut.
