Americans have long been educated to flush their old prescription medicine down the toilet to keep pets and children from accidentally ingesting them. Unfortunately, this logic has enabled our medicines to leak into our waterways, causing aquatic wildlife to show abnormal chemical imbalances; tests in communities around the country also show trace amounts of medicines in our public water supply. The solution: Mix the old medicine with lots of water and stir in kitty litter or sawdust; pour it in a plastic bag, seal it shut and toss into the trash. Better yet: Drop it off at a hazardous waste collection point for disposal.
