If you must use paper towels at home, opt for the 100 percent post-consumer recycled variety. First, these are made from old paper that’s been pulped and made into paper towels. But more important, by buying 100 percent post-consumer paper towels, you’re helping with two things: one, giving a market for recyclable paper; and two, purchasing a product that is compostable. Because the fibers are shorter in recycled paper products, they degrade easily. As long as you didn’t clean up a greasy mess with them, go ahead and toss those brown paper towels into the compost.
